Flourishing Joy

AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives is excited to reveal the new mural Flourishing Joy, a community-informed Afrofuturist mural project led by Jamera DaCosta, co-created with Pamella Chen, on May 13, 2026 at JFM+ (Jane Finch Mall). Located at the north entrance of the Jane Finch Mall, this Afrofuturist-inspired public artwork celebrates the Jane-Finch community's beauty, resilience, and diversity through vibrant storytelling and creative engagement with local residentsespecially Black youth.

Flourishing Joy highlights the underrepresented individuals who demonstrate strength and brilliance, by transforming a visible wall into a bold, imaginative landmark that reflects the mall, who we are and who were becoming. The piece speaks to both place and possibility, reflecting growth, despite the challenges. Central is a hand with a device that projects the story of what lived at Jane and Finch, what remains, and what we hope to sustain beyond its changes. Through it all, this community continues to rise, create, and bloom. They flourish with joy.


The May 13th event is a special milestone for AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives marking two years of impactful work in the JaneFinch community, including the recent honour of the Toronto Community Champion Award (EtobicokeYork) from the City of Toronto. The evening will begin with the unveiling of the Flourishing Joy mural, celebrating creativity, community, and the vibrant spirit of JaneFinch. AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives will also launch Through the Lens of the Dreamers 2.0, the return of an annual outdoor exhibition on the grounds of Jane Finch Mall. This exhibition features 16 artworks by 14 resident artists, highlighting powerful creative voices from Indigenous, Black, and other equity-deserving communities.
